Planning a family journey across Indonesia requires more than selecting attractive hotels and popular excursions. Domestic flights, boat transfers, changing weather conditions and long distances between islands must fit together carefully. Activities also need to be appropriate for your children’s ages, interests and experience.

With more than 20 years of expertise in tailor-made travel throughout Asia, Travel Mart TM plans Indonesia family tours from the first consultation to your return journey. You have one experienced point of contact who coordinates the itinerary, accommodation, transport, guides and selected activities.

We take particular care of the details that make family travel comfortable:

    • a realistic itinerary with sufficient time for rest
    • carefully selected family-friendly hotels and resorts
    • suitable room categories and clearly checked child policies
    • comfortable vehicles and dependable local drivers
    • knowledgeable guides experienced in working with families
    • coordinated domestic flights, boats and island transfers
    • age-appropriate cultural, wildlife and outdoor experiences
    • clearly stated services, inclusions and additional costs
    • reliable local assistance during your journey

Rather than using a standard itinerary, we discuss what your family genuinely wants to experience. Some families prefer culture and gentle activities in Bali and Java. Others are looking for orangutans in Borneo, Komodo dragons, snorkelling or quiet days beside the sea. We then create a route that combines your priorities without unnecessary hotel changes or rushed travel.

Before booking, you receive a detailed proposal with the planned route, accommodation, included services and important travel information. Once everything has been agreed, Travel Mart TM coordinates the individual arrangements and remains your contact for any questions before departure.

A well-planned family holiday in Indonesia should feel exciting, comfortable and manageable. Our aim is to give you the confidence to enjoy the journey while the essential details have already been carefully organised.

Best Places for a Family Holiday in Indonesia

Bali is the most convenient starting point for families visiting Indonesia for the first time. However, Java, Komodo, Borneo, Lombok and the Gili Islands can add history, wildlife and adventure to a longer journey.

Rather than visiting too many islands, we recommend choosing two or three regions. This creates a varied Indonesia family holiday without unnecessary flights, long transfers or an overly demanding schedule.

Bali Family Holidays – Culture, Nature and Beaches

Bali offers a wide choice of family-friendly accommodation, manageable travel distances and activities for different age groups. In Ubud and central Bali, you can walk through rice terraces, visit temples and discover traditional villages. Batik painting, Balinese cooking and craft workshops provide engaging ways for children to experience local culture.

Colourful dance performances introduce the island’s legends, music and costumes. Meanwhile, the beaches of Sanur and Nusa Dua offer convenient settings for swimming and relaxation. Jimbaran combines a broad sandy bay with seafood restaurants and attractive sunset views.

    Family-friendly attractions in Bali

    • Ubud rice terraces – gentle walks through tropical landscapes and farming villages
    • Sacred Monkey Forest, Ubud – a forest and temple complex inhabited by long-tailed macaques; children should remain closely supervised
    • Bali Bird Park – tropical gardens featuring birds from Indonesia and other parts of the world
    • Bali Safari and Marine Park – guided safari experiences and educational wildlife activities
    • Waterbom Bali – pools, water slides and play areas for different age groups
    • Balinese dance performances – an accessible introduction to local stories and traditions
    • Batik, painting and cooking classes – interactive cultural activities for children and adults
    • Ayung River rafting – suitable for active families, subject to age limits and river conditions
    • Menjangan Island – snorkelling and marine-life experiences for confident swimmers
    • Sanur, Nusa Dua and Jimbaran – family-friendly beach areas with a broad choice of resorts

Yogyakarta and Central Java – Temples and Traditional Arts

Yogyakarta is one of the most rewarding cultural destinations for an Indonesia tour with children. Historic monuments, traditional arts and creative workshops allow younger travellers to discover the country through direct experiences.

The principal highlight is Borobudur, one of the world’s most significant Buddhist monuments. Nearby villages offer opportunities to learn about local crafts and rural life. Prambanan, an impressive Hindu temple complex, introduces families to the architecture and legends of ancient Java.

Family experiences in Yogyakarta and Central Java

    • Borobudur Temple – monumental architecture and an introduction to Buddhist history
    • Prambanan Temple – an important Hindu complex associated with Javanese legends
    • Batik workshops – an opportunity to create an individual fabric design
    • Traditional puppet performances – music and storytelling through the art of wayang
    • Village visits – encounters with craftspeople and local communities
    • Mount Merapi countryside – nature excursions through volcanic landscapes
    • Mount Bromo – dramatic scenery for older children comfortable with an early start and uneven terrain

Yogyakarta and Bali work particularly well together. Nevertheless, sufficient time should be allowed between excursions, especially when travelling with younger children.

Komodo Family Tours – Wildlife and Island Adventures

Komodo National Park offers one of Indonesia’s most memorable wildlife experiences. Ranger-guided walks on Komodo or Rinca Island provide opportunities to observe Komodo dragons while learning about their habitat and conservation.

A carefully selected boat journey also reveals secluded bays, rugged islands and clear waters. Depending on your children’s ages and swimming ability, the itinerary may include snorkelling, beach visits and short nature walks.

Family highlights in Komodo and Flores

    • Ranger-guided Komodo dragon walks
    • Island cruises through Komodo National Park
    • Pink Beach for swimming and snorkelling
    • Manta Point for possible manta-ray sightings, subject to sea conditions
    • Flores villages and landscapes beyond the national park

Komodo is generally best suited to families with older children because of the heat, boat travel and walking conditions. Activities should always follow the guidance of park rangers and experienced local crews.

Borneo Family Holidays – Orangutans and Rainforest Journeys

For families interested in wildlife, Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesian Borneo offers an exceptional rainforest experience. You travel along the river aboard a traditional klotok boat and visit orangutan conservation and research areas.

One of the best-known locations is Camp Leakey. Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed; however, the journey provides a meaningful introduction to rainforest ecosystems and conservation.

    Family experiences in Borneo

    • Orangutan observation in Tanjung Puting National Park
    • Visits to Camp Leakey and other feeding stations
    • River travel aboard a traditional klotok
    • Overnight accommodation on the boat
    • Guided rainforest walks
    • Opportunities to observe monkeys, birds and other wildlife

Facilities are simpler than those available at Bali’s leading resorts. Nevertheless, a Borneo river journey can be particularly rewarding for adventurous families with a strong interest in nature.

Lombok and the Gili Islands – Beaches and Snorkelling

Lombok and the Gili Islands provide a relaxing conclusion to a cultural or wildlife tour. Compared with Bali’s busiest areas, they offer a quieter atmosphere, attractive beaches and easy access to the sea.

Gili Air is suitable for families seeking a balance of local restaurants, beach time and snorkelling. Gili Meno is smaller and more secluded. On Lombok, traditional Sasak villages and northern waterfalls add cultural and natural variety.

Family activities in Lombok and the Gili Islands

    • Beach stays on Lombok, Gili Air or Gili Meno
    • Family snorkelling excursions
    • Opportunities to see tropical fish and sea turtles
    • Visits to traditional Sasak villages
    • Waterfall walks in northern Lombok
    • Accommodation in selected beachfront resorts

Swimming conditions and boat transfers should be considered carefully when travelling with very young children.

Which Indonesian Destinations Are Best for Your Family?

The ideal route depends on your children’s ages and your shared interests:

    • First family holiday in Indonesia: Bali with Yogyakarta and a beach extension
    • Culture and easy activities: Bali and Central Java
    • Wildlife and rainforest: Borneo combined with Bali
    • Marine life and adventure: Komodo and Flores with Bali
    • Older and active children: Java, Komodo or Borneo
    • Beach holiday with gentle sightseeing: Bali, Lombok or the Gili Islands
    • Longer family journey: Bali, Java and either Komodo or Borneo

A well-paced itinerary usually includes two or three regions, allowing enough time for rest and spontaneous activities.

Is Indonesia Suitable for Young Children?

Indonesia can be an excellent family destination when the route is planned carefully. Bali offers the widest choice of family-oriented hotels, restaurants and easy excursions. Sanur and Nusa Dua are particularly convenient for younger children, while Ubud introduces them to nature and culture.

For families with small children, we recommend fewer hotel changes, shorter transfers and regular rest days. More demanding experiences in Komodo, Borneo or volcanic regions are better assessed individually.

How Long Should an Indonesia Family Tour Be?

For Bali alone, ten to fourteen days provide enough time for Ubud, cultural excursions and a beach stay. If you wish to add Java, Lombok or another island, approximately two to three weeks creates a more comfortable itinerary.

Longer journeys can include Borneo or Komodo without rushing. However, the exact duration should reflect your children’s ages, school holidays and experience with long-distance travel.
