Why Choose an Ayurveda Retreat at Manaltheeram?

Manaltheeram is not simply a wellness hotel offering occasional Ayurveda massages. Instead, Ayurveda forms the foundation of your entire stay. Treatments, nutrition, periods of rest, yoga and daily routines are carefully coordinated.

At the beginning of your Ayurveda retreat, you will have a detailed consultation with an Ayurveda physician. Your individual constitution, current physical condition, lifestyle and personal goals will all be considered. Based on this assessment, the physician will prepare a tailored treatment and nutrition plan.

Regular follow-up consultations take place throughout your stay. If necessary, your treatments, Ayurvedic preparations or diet may be adjusted. As a result, your Ayurveda program does not follow a rigid standard schedule. It develops according to your individual needs and your body’s response to the treatments.

Traditional Ayurveda Treatments in Kerala

Treatments at the Manaltheeram Ayurveda Resort are carried out by trained Ayurveda therapists under the supervision of experienced physicians. Depending on your treatment plan and medical recommendation, several therapies may be combined.

Your individual program may include:

  • Abhyanga: a traditional full-body massage using warm herbal oils
  • Shirodhara: a continuous stream of warm oil or another prescribed liquid poured gently over the forehead
  • Pizhichil: a rhythmic treatment in which warm medicated oil is applied over the body
  • Njavarakizhi: a traditional therapy using warm herbal rice bundles
  • Shirovasti: a treatment in which warm medicated oil is retained on the head for a prescribed period
  • Udvartana: a stimulating massage using selected herbal powders
  • Nasya: the therapeutic administration of herbal oils or preparations through the nose
  • Vasti: one of the principal therapies used in classical Panchakarma
  • Thalam: a prescribed herbal and oil preparation applied to the head
  • Herbal poultice and bundle massages
  • Ayurvedic steam treatments
  • Individual oil, herb and body treatments

The exact combination, duration and intensity of your therapies will be determined by the Ayurveda physician. Your current condition and your response during the retreat will always be taken into account.

Ayurveda for Stress, Regeneration and Physical Well-Being

An Ayurveda retreat can focus on different aspects of physical and emotional well-being. Many guests choose Manaltheeram to reduce stress, regain energy and develop a more conscious relationship with their body.

Following a careful Ayurvedic medical assessment, individual treatment plans may also be created for guests seeking support with joint or back discomfort, restricted mobility or specific musculoskeletal and neurological concerns.

The resort also offers Ayurveda programs focused on:

  • Stress management
  • Rejuvenation and regeneration
  • Traditional body purification
  • Weight management
  • Healthy ageing
  • General physical and mental well-being

Every treatment plan is prepared individually. Therefore, the type and duration of treatments can vary considerably from one guest to another.

Ayurveda should be viewed as a complementary system of health care and does not replace conventional medical diagnosis or treatment. Guests with existing medical conditions should consult their doctor before travelling.

Panchakarma Retreat at Manaltheeram

Panchakarma retreat in Kerala is one of the most intensive forms of traditional Ayurveda. It is not a standard detox package. Instead, Panchakarma consists of several carefully coordinated phases that are selected according to your constitution and physical condition.

The retreat may include preparatory therapies, internal and external oil treatments, herbal preparations and traditional purification procedures. Throughout the Panchakarma program, your treatments, meals and periods of rest are coordinated under Ayurvedic medical supervision.

A stay of at least 14 days is often recommended for a more intensive Ayurveda retreat. However, depending on your goals and the physician’s assessment, 21 or 28 days may be more suitable. We therefore recommend discussing the appropriate duration before booking your journey.

Yoga and Meditation During Your Ayurveda Retreat

Yoga and Ayurveda complement each other naturally. For this reason, yoga, breathing exercises and meditation are integral parts of the holistic concept at Manaltheeram.

Daily yoga sessions can support flexibility, body awareness and gentle physical balance. At the same time, meditation and conscious breathing can help calm the mind and encourage deeper relaxation.

The exercises can be adapted to each participant’s physical abilities and general well-being. Therefore, guests without previous yoga experience are also welcome to participate.

During an intensive Ayurveda or Panchakarma program, participation may depend on the recommendation of your Ayurveda physician.

Ayurvedic Nutrition Based on the Three Doshas

Nutrition is an essential part of every authentic Ayurveda retreat. Your meals are therefore selected in accordance with your constitution and the three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Herbs, spices and fresh ingredients are carefully combined to complement your individual treatment plan. In this way, Ayurvedic nutrition supports the daily therapies and becomes an active part of your retreat.

The Ayurveda restaurant serves a varied selection of vegetarian dishes, soups, fresh juices, herbal teas and traditional Kerala specialities. Vegan meals can also be arranged, subject to the physician’s nutritional recommendations.
